A Life in Design - Leica Competition

Came in first at a Leica x LASALLE College of the arts competition that required the latest generation's take on art, through the lens of Leica TL2 with its theme "A Life in Design"

A Nation Losing Its Toolbox

Skills required of traditional craft and the cultural knowledge behind age-old craftsmanship is gradually being lost. Within an urban city landscape with modern job opportunities, many of the younger generations in Singapore lose the appreciation for traditional craftsmanship found along the busy streets that we walk past everyday. The availability of readily offered products in the mass market challenges the idea of people holding sentimental value to their belongings, therefore discarding items that could be mended.

The value of traditional crafts such as those offered by street cobblers are being questioned within such contexts. Here we documented 3 street cobblers who still see the value in handwork despite others having lesser understanding and appreciation of it.

As such craftsmanship is dying in an increasingly urbanised context, how can it be preserved and past on to future generations?
